Self-Assessment

English Helped me Become a Better Writer.

This self-assessment will review my writing and what I have accomplished as well as overcame throughout the course of the Eng;ish semester. Eng;ish was never a good or bad subject for me, I believe it was just a matter of having good ideas and making my writing stay focused on a specific point. Throughout this English course I have written three essays which have taught me new things about writing and pushed me to try and continue with my ideas in order for me to continue with my writing.

In our first phase assignment, the language and literacy narrative, it took me a minute to process the assignment and what I was actually supposed to be writing about because I didn’t understand what had to be done initially. After the thought process, I had to figure out what I was going to write about since I had to write about myself, my past writing experience and how language and literacy has helped me over time. I finally got to writing about how my reading and writing was different from the rest of my family, given how they grew up compared to me having a better education and b ein pushed to past my limits. I began talking about a time I was practicing my writing for my regents and my teacher was proud of it because it wasn’t like my norm. So he pushed me to write more like that. When I submitted my draft, my professor wanted me to use a media that connected with my story. I didn’t know what to use in the beginning, until I found I resonated with the Maya Angelou poem, Still I Rise. Here is a piece of my writing and how I incorporated my media use and connected it to what I was writing about in my life.

One way that this phase’s assignment has helped me to achieve some of the course learning outcomes is through recognizing the role of language attitudes and standards in empowering, oppressing, and hierarchizing languages and their users, and being open to communicating across different languages and cultures. Along with that, as well as to compose texts that integrate your stance with appropriate sources using strategies such as summary, critical analysis, interpretation, synthesis, and argumentation. With the primary course learning result, this stage has instructed and appeared me that numerous individuals come from diverse foundations, societies and places, subsequently we all aren’t the same and not instructed to talk the same. Numerous individuals come with distinctive emphases, languages, and ways of learning english, so there could be minutes where one isn’t understanding another, but that is not cruel they ought to be judged or thought little of in their dialect and proficiency of such, reading, composing, and talking. For case, a young lady in my course was saying how she initially talked Spanish so she couldn’t say certain things and her English instructor thought little of her saying that she didn’t have a place within the lesson and this was him being judgmental to his understudy considering she doesn’t get English and doesn’t know how to write. With my second course learning objective, as shown above, I learned to use multimedia in my writing and interpret what it meant to me and my writing. Though I felt like that was one of my hard moments during this phase because I had no idea on what I wanted to use and how it would connect to my life experience in writing.

In the last phase assignment, the research paper, it wasn’t difficult for me to know what I was going to write my essay on, though I was stuck between two topics, but I ended up choosing discrimination against code-switching/ code-meshing. I knew a lot about the topic but writing about why people should care and making it something engaging to the readers for them to understand why it is an important topic. The hardest part of this assignment was researching and finding good sources to help with my essay and that would. This phase’s assignment has helped me to achieve some of the Course Learning Outcomes, such as locating research sources in the library’s databases or archives and on the Internet and evaluating them for credibility, accuracy, timeliness, and bias. Along with that, to compose texts that integrate your stance with appropriate sources using strategies such as summary, critical analysis, interpretation, synthesis, and argumentation. Amid this task, I had to discover sources that would make sense with my contention. I analyzed numerous diary articles within the Cuny Library, making beyond any doubt they were valid and met the desires of a great source so that I am able to effectively utilize them to demonstrate my contention. For this case, I would utilize the CRAAP test taught in course to assess my data. Alongside that, I would make beyond any doubt to use sources that bolstered my contention, and after that I would explain the utilize of the source and after that summarize them so that my gathering of people gets it the point I am making in conjunction with the source, as well as why I chose the particular assets. This essay has helped maintain research and know to incorporate it in my writing to reach out to my targeted audience.
